EXPLOITS AT WEST POLEY
And what shall we start the 300th celebrations with? Here is a very rare video of Charlie Condou in one of his first acting roles when he was about 12 years old. The video below is just an excerpt to give you an idea of where it all started! This clip is from my own personal collection.

Written by author Thomas Hardy “Exploits at West Poley” is a children’s story of a motherless boy (Leonard played by Charlie Condou) who goes to stay with his widowed aunt and older boy cousin Steve in West Poley. The two boys become friends and explore the caves in the nearby Mendips where they find a secret cave inside a larger one with an subterranean stream. Originally the discovery amuses them as they change the direction of this stream with disastrous results for West Poley, but much to the delight of East Poley's residents. Changing the stream back involves another young boy (who is apprenticed to the cruel miller) and two life threatening incidents. This story unlike Hardy's usual novels, everything ends happily! The story was lost for nearly 70 years. It was originally written in 1883 as a serialization in a Boston youth magazine Youth's Companion.

TO KILL A PRIEST
The second video is the trailer for the movie "To Kill A Priest" made in 1988 starring Ed Harris and many other notables including Charlie Condou. Charlie was 15 when he made this movie and he had a very large role.

TO KILL A PRIEST

One of the first films by Polish director Agnieszka Holland to gain international acclaim, this drama is a joint French-American production based loosely on the real-life story of the dissident Polish priest Jerzy Popieluszko. In the early 1980s, as the democracy and labour movement known as Solidarity was challenging Soviet authority in Poland, an outspoken priest, Father Alek (Christopher Lambert), defies martial law and continues to rally followers around the cause of Solidarity. The Soviet-controlled Polish government enlists a police official, Stefan (Ed Harris), to stop the priest. Stefan, a devoted party follower, finds that the only way he can silence Father Alek is to have him killed. Along the way, however, the priest has a profound influence on Stefan. Among those in minor roles are Charlie Condou, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, Pete Postlethwaite, and Tim Roth. Holland would go on to direct The Secret Garden and Washington Square.
