Coronation Street star, Charlie Condou, and actress Sophie Ward announced the winners of the annual Out In The City and g3 magazine Readers' Awards in a glittering ceremony on Friday night. The winners, who were chosen by the readers of both magazines, were commended for having a positive impact on the LGBT community over the past year. Those who collected an award at the Landmark Hotel in London included Clare Balding and the fabulous Stephen Fry, both of whom won the Broadcaster of the Year award. Gok Wan won the Out In The City Celebrity of the Year award, while the readers of g3 chose actress/singer, Heather Peace. Community groups were celebrated on the night with the LGBT charity Stonewall picking up five awards. Best event of the year went to Manchester Pride and Brighton Pride. Reflecting the importance of gay people in the workplace, the Royal Bank of Scotland and The Co-operative Group's LGBT employee networks scooped awards. Inspirational Role Model went to Royal Bank of Scotland's Andi Keeling, director of women's markets, and Anthony Watson, managing director and chief information officer of Barclays. The awards were headline sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, and supported by Barclays, Dawson Cornwell, the Royal Air Force, The Want to be a Parent Show and Bright Horizons.
Havn't seen Charlie on TV since last year and miss him, is he getting back with Cotton? Is he still going out with that dull woman? Is he still a midwife? Is someone writing him out the story-lines? What's going on? With so many of the Corrie cast in the hands of the Old Bill (the police for you Aussies) on child abuse charges, there must be some openings for him.....the new Ken Barlow perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI'm also worried that Marcus Dent has been side-lined, according to the corriepedia, he has appeared 12 times in 2013. All of these appearances were very minor, some non-speaking. Sean Tully has appeared 28 times in 2013, and many other middle ranking regulars have been much more visible. The script writers are partly to blame, the Marcus Dent character has never been fully developed, the Marcus Sean match was an uncomfortable disaster and his subsequent pairing with Maria nothing short of farcical. There is however a wider problem, Condou does not seem happy with the role and seems to be moulding himself on Michael Chashman, an Eastenders soap actor who used his Television career as a springboard for his political career. My guess is that Condou will do likewise, his energies have been applied towards his support of numerous charities and his gay-rights work rather than on the cobbles. If you want to see Charlie go to an awards ceremony, rather than turning on the box. His acting career may be in the doldrums, however I'm certain that a much more successful political career awaits!
ReplyDeleteThe writers had to work around Samia doing Dancing on Ice which meant Chas was also out for a while then realised that it was a hard place to come back from script-wise with all the other issues facing the Corrie cast. I'm sure things will have longevity as Charlie is up for a 2 yr contract.
ReplyDeletePolitics would be too dull for our Charlie and I hope that Tom is right about the contract. The problem with soap contracts is that they provide for a minimum number of appearances, and the actors are paid per appearance. If the producers have no use for the, and confine him to the minimum, he's in trouble and will have to supplement his income opening Pound land stores or working at McDonalds. The "new broom " at Corrie is ruthless and my guess is that the cast contracts can be ended on notice. Challenging times are ahead for Charlie, I hope that he will be able to inject some life into Marcus and perhaps he mend his relationship with Cotton. I suspect that he will follow Samia and push for a place on Dancing on Ice (a brilliant boost to any actor), or a reality show. Would love to see him on Celebrity Big Brother!
ReplyDeleteCharlie is unique, his Corrie character may not be popular but he has a high profile in the LGBT community, tweets a lot and writes well. His on screen persona may be as dull as hell but in real life he is funny and charming ( a combination which is made for reality TV ). He'd be a better journalist or TV presenter than a politician.
His partner, Cameron Loux, is a Doctor and his dad owns Londons top celebrity night club, Paramount......Loads A Money...........If he is axed he can just stay at home looking after the kids and biding his time until he gets a proper acting role....I loved Jonatton Yeah? I hate Marcus Dent and squirm when I see him playing that crap role. Come on Charlie mate, show us what you've got and find a new Nathan Barley!
