Pizza-truck crowd defends two friends against anti-gay slurs

A late-night Columbus pizza truck has gained national attention after an employee and a line of customers turned away a man who was using anti-gay slurs while waiting to order a slice in one of the city’s most gay-friendly neighbourhoods. It all started when Joel Diaz posted an account on his Facebook page, detailing how a stranger told him and friend Ethan White to cut their “gay (stuff)” out while they waited outside a Mikey’s Late Night Slice truck early on Sunday after a night out in the Short North. The friends were standing close together and holding hands in an attempt to stay warm. Diaz said other customers in line immediately came to their defence telling the man that anti-gay comments were not OK. The man then became angry and loud and spewed several slurs, prompting Mikey’s employees to tell him to stop, Diaz said. When he didn't, employee Levi Taylor asked him to leave the line. “It was pretty amazing having that feeling of not being alone and having a group of people support you,” said Diaz, 31, who lives in the University District and works as chief development officer for AIDS Resource Centre Ohio. “It was really, really eye-opening to see that and experience that first hand.” His post received more than 10,000 likes on Facebook. Mikey’s posted a response that also garnered thousands of likes, and a version posted to the website Reddit.com attracted hundreds of thousands. The attention the ordeal has received has been “mind-blowing,” Diaz said. Mikey’s says on its Facebook page that it’s humbled by the attention and is proud of its employees and neighbours. “I think it speaks volumes for our neighbourhood and our city,” said CEO Mikey Sorboro. “It says, perhaps, the tides are turning a little bit, and incidents like this won’t be tolerated, hopefully, and things are starting to get a little bit better.” White, a university student, said he was shocked by the man’s comments, then quickly realized that “literally everybody in the line stood up for us.” “We didn't ask them to help. They just did it on their own,” said White, 22.
