Elton John backs Brighton Student Pride and one of the guest celebrities is Charlie Condou
Elton John and David Furnish have agreed to be ambassadors of Britain’s National Student Pride in Brighton on the south coast of England. Their support caps plans for the most celebrity-packed Student Pride to date this weekend (1 to 3 March). The main pride day on Saturday will include guest celebrities like Charlie Condou from long-running TV soap Coronation Street. A debate on homophobia in sport will feature former England and Chelsea footballer Graeme Le Saux and former England rugby union player Ben Cohen, himself a campaigner against LGBT bullying. While Elton and his husband are not attending, their endorsement is a major boost to the event, helping attract other celebrity backing. Tom Guy, president of National Student Pride commented: ‘I am extremely honoured to have both Elton John and David Furnish on board. Their commitment to equality and to the cause of LGBT students is inspirational and we could not have wished for better ambassadors.’ Events will start on Friday (1 March) with a party in Charles Street Bar and Revenge nightclub, two of the seaside city’s best-known gay venues. As well as the panel talks on Saturday, there will be a job fair and the first Student Pride Awards, hosted by Dan Gillespie Sells, frontman of indie group The Feeling. After an evening bar-crawl, students will join a club night headlined by X Factor pop star Lucy Spraggan.
