Mr Charlie Condou, 40, is an actor from London. Mr
Cameron Laux, 49, is a writer who grew up in western Canada but has lived in
London for "more than 20 years". They have been a couple for eight
years, and live together in London with their two children, Georgia, three, and
Hal, one. The children were born to a surrogate mother - Mr Condou's long-time
friend, actress Ms Katherine Kanter - with whom the couple share parental
duties.
How did you meet?
Mr Condou: We met at the gym, a while before we started dating.
Mr Laux: An eternity, in gay terms. We met at the gym! It
sounds terrible, doesn't it? We actually thought the other was straight; it
took a while for the penny to drop. So much for our gaydars, right?
At what point did you start dating seriously?
Mr Condou: It was my first serious relationship, so I began thinking of it in
those terms quite quickly. Although it still felt a very significant thing for
me to commit to.
Mr Laux: I'd been in two fairly long relationships before
meeting Charlie, so I guess my outlook was a little more cautious; less
romantic than Charlie's, perhaps. It was only a few weeks into the relationship
that he was talking about spending the rest of our lives together.
How do you spend quality time together?
Mr Condou: Since the kids came along, the way we spend time
together has changed. We try to go away often - if only for a long weekend -
without the kids, to remind ourselves that we are a couple as well as a family.
In what ways do you differ?
Mr Laux: Oh, we're different in so many ways. Charlie's constantly on Facebook
and Twitter... and I hate them! I don't hate him for being on them, of course.
We disagree on music - I think the only point at which we cross over is Azealia
Banks. We feud whenever we listen to things on our iPods. It's amazing, really,
how opposed we are on so many things. Politically we agree, at least.
Mr Condou: And that's so important. Of course you can
disagree on music, but a person's political beliefs are so fundamental, and as
we're both quite politically minded, I think it would be difficult for us to
get along without agreeing on that.
How have you changed since you met one another?
Mr Condou: I hate that old adage of referring to somebody as your other half, or
saying "I'm complete now" - I'd like to think that I was complete
before we met!
Mr Laux: If you have to rely on someone else to complete you, you're in
trouble.
Mr Condou: Having said that, I definitely feel as if I'm more of a man now.
Whether that's due in part to the relationship, though, or becoming a parent,
or simply just getting older...
Mr Laux: ...Or your extensive gender surgery?
Have you had an influence on each other's style?
Mr Condou: Not really! We know each other so well, but still neither of us would
be able to buy clothes for the other.
Mr Laux: I don't get that neo-geezer furrow you plough one
bit. He wears Nike Air Max, but I'm damned if I can work out which ones - they
all look the same to me.
What's the first thing you miss about each other
when you're apart?
Mr Condou: I like being with Cameron; it's nice having somebody there to ignore.
I mean that in the nicest possible way [laughs]! There's something very
comforting about having the person you love next to you.
Mr Laux: It's wonderful being at that stage when there's a
lot of solitude built into your relationship, where you can just coexist. It's
a paradox that people who haven't been in a long-term relationship might not
understand: that being with someone can somehow be more peaceful than being
alone.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a
happy relationship?
Mr Laux: Being able to talk to each other honestly.
Mr Condou: I think that's true, and it's something that is
harder than it sounds. Because being in a relationship is often like having a
mirror held up in front of you - especially when that person knows you as well
as Cameron knows me. It's also important to learn to put someone else's
interests in front of your own.

SUPPORT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
The following article was from 2012 and it's nice to know that the cause for equal rights has been making progress since this was published but of course, there is a long way to go - Tom Wynn in Oz.
Charlie Condou
Actor, Coronation Street
"I'm in favour of same-sex marriage because I believe in equality for everyone. I believe it is a civil right, not a privilege. If Gays are equal to Straights, then we should be allowed to marry, as Straight people are."
Boy George
Singer
"For once I agree with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson when he says 'just whack it through'. I think the subject of marriage equality for gay men & women has been dragged on for far too long. Everyone should have the right to marry and to enjoy the same rights regardless of their sexuality. It's a very romantic idea and fits very well into religious concepts of monogamy and one partner for life. I cannot understand the fuss! "
Jonathan Harvey
Playwright, including Gimme Gimme Gimme and Coronation Street
"What a shame that even in 2012 we are still fighting for equality. And what a shame that some people find our demands for equality so abhorrent. If the straight person next to me can marry the person they love, why can't I?"
Holly Johnson
Musician & Artist
"Granting equality to a suppressed minority is the sign of a civilised nation."
