A TABLOID Newspaper was forced to apologise last week after it incorrectly published reports that former Coronation Street star and Southport resident Jean Alexander had died. The 88-year-old actress, who lives in the Hesketh Park area of the resort, was taken to Southport hospital after a health scare but was later discharged and sent home to recover. However The Daily Mirror published an online report on Wednesday evening (June 25) stating that the former Coronation Street and Last of The Summer Wine actress had passed away. The report, although quickly removed from the tabloid's website, was available long enough to cause hundreds of fans to post condolences across social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. A spokesperson for the Mirror told The Champion: “We must offer our apologies, Coronation Street legend Jean Alexander is not dead.
”We are very sorry for any distress caused.“
The report was written by Daily Mirror TV and Entertainment editor Rob Leigh, who published the story online after a concerned neighbour informed the paper that Jean had been taken to hospital via ambulance. It is believed the report was intended to be front page news in the printed version of the paper the following day (Thursday June 26) but it was later changed to say the actress had been take to hospital.
Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou later said: ”The Daily Mirror have made a very, very big mistake and Jean Alexander has not died.“ Fans of Jean immediately took to social networking site twitter to voice their anger over the false report. One Twitter user posted: ”I can't believe that The Mirror killed off Jean Alexander online - what appalling journalism. “Hoax death reports are bad enough without the press doing them.”

Coronation Street fans won't want to miss tonight's instalment as actor Charlie Condou is taking to the podium. Thankfully, Charlie's love life is far less complicated than that of his Street character Marcus – he's been happily settled with his partner Cameron Laux for the past nine years. Also taking part are 5ive singer Scott Robinson and his childhood sweetheart Kerry, who tied the knot 13 years ago, plus The Liver Birds actress Nerys Hughes and her husband of 42 years Patrick Turley. All the couples are particularly cute and loved-up tonight so it's tough to call who'll get to play the final round…
