Corrie stars back ILF campaign
16 April 2014
Coronation Street stars have added their support to the campaign to save the Independent Living Fund.
We and a number of campaign groups, including Disabled People Against Cuts, are fighting against the government's decision to close the ILF, which more than 18,000 severely-disabled people rely on, in June 2015.
This is despite a victory in the Court of Appeal last November, when five disabled people fought previous plans to close the fund and it was found that the government had breached the equality duties.
The government now claims to have got around the court findings and says it will devolve the money to local authorities for 12 months with no ring-fencing. This means that the valuable expertise and skills of our members currently working at the ILF will be lost.
After June 2016 there will be no additional funding for already cash-strapped local authorities to meet their legal obligations and experts believe that combined with the loss of experienced staff, under pressure councils will resort to placing severely-disabled people in residential care.
Totally unjust
More than a dozen stars of the UK's longest-running soap, including Cherylee Houston who plays Izzy Armstrong, Charlie Condou who plays Marcus Dent and Krissi Bohn who plays Jenna Kamara, held up Save The Independent Living Fund postcards.
Cherylee has previously said on Twitter about the ILF: "It's sickening that the government is ignoring a court ruling and over 18k disabled people who currently live independently will have their care removed. It's totally unjust and it cannot go through."
Take a look at the pictures on Facebook.
