TV Coronation Street’s Condou also reveals he will wed his partner when
equal gay and lesbian marriage comes to Britain
02 MARCH 2013 BY TRIS REID-SMITH
Coronation Street TV star Charlie
Condou has defended his soap’s writers who have made his gay character fall in
love with a woman. He also said gay male portrayals on British television have
improved but it is still important LGBT issues get into people’s homes via the media.
He was talking at a panel debate for National Student Pride in Brighton on the
south coast of England that saw others calling for more media representation of
transgender, bisexual and lesbian people. Condou, plays gay character Marcus
Dent in the long-running British TV soap and is himself openly gay. He said
things had improved since the earliest openly gay soap characters appeared in
the 1980s. Condou said: ‘I was at an event recently and Michael Cashman was
speaking who is an MEP [Member of the European Parliament]. But years ago he
was part of Eastenders’ [another long-running British TV soap opera] first gay
couple, Colin and Barry. And he was talking about when he was first on the
screen, there was a huge outcry to get them off television. ‘Now there are all
sorts of different types of gays on television. On Coronation Street you have
the character of Sean who is quite camp and my character who is quite
different. One of the recent storylines in Corrie was about me and Sean looking
after his son and after a while people got on with the fact it was two men
bringing up a kid together on the show. And it’s quite important that is
getting into people’s homes. ‘My character is a gay man who is now with a woman
but identifies as a gay man rather than as a bisexual. A lot of the gay
community has said I can’t believe they have made this positive role model
straight. ‘But that’s not what they have done. Gay people should be the last to
judge who other people sleep with. Bisexuals get a lot of stick about not
making up their minds… the acceptance needs to start with the gay community.’ He
also said some film stars were sometimes still scared to come out as LGBT. ‘I
had a conversation with an actor who unfortunately will remain nameless, a
housewives’ choice, doing lots of movies and he won’t come out because he felt
it would affect his career,’ he said.
James Wharton, celebrity gay soldier
and LGBT rights campaigner, who was also on the panel, added: ‘We talk about
Charlie’s character and Sean’s character and that’s two different gay men. ‘But
under representation on TV is still a problem. I think there is lesbian
under-representation, it’s great we have people like Claire Balding [BBC TV
sports presenter] but where are the other lesbian women?’
Matthew Cain, culture editor for
British TV’s Channel 4 News, said it was possible to do his job as an arts
reporter on news as a gay man but harder to get more ‘hard news’ jobs, for
example as a political editor. Cain said: ‘I agree with Charlie we have further
to go than we think. When I started on screen on Channel 4 a few years ago,
because I’m not only gay but quite camp people were saying they couldn’t take
me seriously.’
Transgender rights activist and
journalist Paris Lees said she no longer has a TV because she found the lack of
decent trans representation too much to bear. She said: ‘If you have got a box
set of a comedy series, I can pretty much guarantee there will be a person like
me in there [being made a joke of]. When I became an activist a few years ago I
very much focused on the media as we have made a lot of gains but we need to
win hearts and minds. ‘For me, I want to see a trans news presenter – there is
no reason why we can’t do it and we need that stamp of legitimacy. We are a
media-obsessed society and we need role models.’
Stephen Gilbert, a Liberal Democrat
Member of Parliament who has campaigned for equal marriage, asked the panel how
gay and lesbian marriage rights will change society when it is passed by his
colleagues. Condou said: ‘We will get married at some point but we wanted to
wait until it is equal. ‘We are not quite there yet [on equal marriage] because
of the opt-outs. I remember when we got civil partnerships, people were saying
it was essentially the same thing – and I was saying well why isn’t it the same
thing.’ He went on to make a joke at the expense of Cardinal Keith O’Brien,
previously Britain’s leading gay Catholic who spearheaded the campaign against
equal marriage in Scotland. O’Brien was forced to resign recently when allegations
emerged he had engaged in ‘inappropriate acts’ with his priests. Condou said:
‘When the cardinal resigned I put a message on Twitter saying “I don’t know
what the fuss is about, he only fiddled about with a few blokes, it’s not like
he tried to marry one.”’
And Wharton added: ‘Cardinal O’Brien
wasn’t just being against gay marriage, he was being hateful. And what has
happened now, he has been forced to resign because five male priests have made
allegations against him. I am glad he has been exposed for what he is and I
hope he goes to jail.’
For legal and ethical reasons, Gay
Star News notes the allegations against O’Brien have not been investigated and
proved.
National Student Pride attracted
students from all over the UK for the event which will culminate in a club
night including lesbian X Factor pop star Lucy Spraggan tonight.

lad_mark: @gaystarnews @Charliecondou @studentpride Some men and women have feelings for both sexes but seem to attract disdain from many "gen" gays.
Charliecondou: @lad_mark @gaystarnews @studentpride bi-phobia is a big problem within the gay community in my opinion

nerdwillis: @Charliecondou @gaystarnews @studentpride I wish that biphobia and bierasure were talked about more at the QT debate rather than lumped in

shebahronay: @Wendy_Wason yeah but they're truthfully shite all the time. And have wonky teeth
Wendy_Wason: @shebahronay I disagree. I'd rather be complimented by someone who doesn't mean it in LA ,than be insulted by someone who does in London.
