MY BODY MY RULES:
AN ALTERNATE LOOK AT PORNOGRAPHY
Charliecondou: This is completely brilliant http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1855186222/my-body-my-rules-an-alternative-look-at-pornograph @Wendy_Wason
A series of funny shorts (video below) that show how familiar scenarios in pornography may play out in real life.
by Wendy Wason
“My Body My Rules” is the brainchild of stand-up comedian and film-maker, Wendy Wason. The project is designed to achieve cut-through in a critical health issue facing UK youth, with potential for global online impact. Wendy is not only a performer, she's also the mother of three young children. She is all too aware that an alarming number of young people are getting their sex and relationship education from online pornography. This pornography is extremely easy to access and presents a very skewed idea of what is the norm in a loving, sexual relationship. Rather than lecture teenagers on how to have sex and respect women, “My Body My Rules" will show, in a humorous way, how a woman with a healthy level of self-esteem would react if men behaved towards her the way they do in porn films. “My Body My Rules” is a working title for 6 short films. The set-ups are recognisable from porn films but the pay-offs are very different. In each short, we see the women taking control and the men getting the wrong idea. The films are currently self-funded and Wendy is working with directors Jill Robertson of Law and Order, James Serafinowicz, Nat Saunders and producers Dan McCulloch who produced Endeavour and Sue Liggat who produced Sherlock. Actors Peter Serafinowicz, Stephen Mangan, Valerie Edmond, Alistair Mackenzie and the cast of Merlin have agreed to take part and Wendy is in conversation with many others.
This project brings with it many challenges.
There are 6 separate short films to be shot so it involves enlisting the help of a lot people and co-ordinating a number of different schedules.
This goes from cast and crew to marketing individuals who will help spread the message.
Our message has to be carefully handled. We are letting teenagers know that online pornography is not the normal way to have sex. It is fantasy and yet teenagers resist adults telling them what to do so it is a difficult message to manage.
We have filmed the first short on a very limited budget and managed to pull a few favours to do so. If our budget is restricted then we will have to resort to that for the other films, but it would be great to have some financial backing to push these through as smoothly as possible.
With funding, comes the possibility to make these shorts the best they can be.
We need help with filming, sound and post-production.
We already have interest from film festivals in regard to their content; we just need the production values to be as high as possible.
One of the concerns for this project is that once completed if these films garner a wide audience, there may need to be a support site in place, where teenagers can come and discuss their queries and questions about sex in an anonymous online forum. They won’t have to discuss it with their parents – embarrassing – or their peers, who may not give them the most authentic account of their own sexual experiences.
It would be great for teenagers and young adults to see that there are other aspects to intimacy, than just online pornography.

A VERY DISNEY CHRISTMAS

Johnny Vegas, also known by his real name Michael Pennington, pictured with fans at a book reading session promoting his autobiography, Becoming Johnny Vegas.
Thoughtful, softly spoken and self-deprecating are not terms you would typically associate with larger-than-life comedian Johnny Vegas. But that’s exactly what his creator, Michael Pennington, was as he chatted with fellow “local legend” Frank Cottrell Boyce in front of a captivated audience at St Helens Town Hall on Monday evening. As well as reading extracts from his new book, Becoming Johnny Vegas, Michael spoke with touching honesty about his “blissful” childhood growing up in Thatto Heath, his favourite teacher at West Park and the origins of Johnny Vegas. But why choose now to put pen to paper? “In the last few years I’ve been doing different work and, after becoming a dad and life settling down a bit, I felt I had enough perspective and confidence to sit down and write this book,” said the 42-year-old. “I had gone from being Michael to Johnny Vegas for so long that in a lot of people’s eyes he had control over me. So I decided to go right to the roots of Johnny’s takeover bid after Edinburgh 1997 and it’s quite an emotional journey. “It’s a good job I wrote the book and not Johnny though. Can you imagine him writing a book? It would be all crayons and threads... in fact that would probably be the title!” Watched by, among others, Mayor of St Helens Andy Bowden, former teachers, schoolmates and Coronation Street stars Chris Gascoyne and Charlie Condou - aka Peter Barlow and Marcus Dent - it was already standing room only by the time Michael and screenwriter Frank took to the stage. Speaking next to a screen showing images from his childhood, Michael also told of his time at priest school. He said: “I grew up in a parish which felt wonderful to belong to. But I didn’t quite know what I was letting myself in for at priest school and it was a real wrench for me to go away from my home. “I struggled with the regime and was desperately homesick.” He also joked how after his first kiss with a girl “the Vatican didn’t stand a chance!” And he saved a special mention for one of his former teachers at West Park, Rowena Rowlands. He said: “She was incredibly beautiful and incredibly bohemian - she was the thinking man’s crumpet! She was also the first teacher who had a real impact on me. “Despite me desperately wanting to just blend into the background she simply wouldn’t let me.”
