MARCUS DENT ON CORRIE - A POTTED HISTORY
Marcus was a love interest for Sean Tully starting in 2007. The relationship seemed fine until Marcus grew tired of Sean's jealousy and stupidity.
Marcus moved back to London in 2008. Marcus didn't return to the show until Easter 2011 when he had a chance meeting with Sean who had come to London to care for his son, Dylan.
Marcus moved back to Coronation Street mid 2011. Things were bumpy for a while as Sean once again resumed being a jerk leaving Marcus to wonder why he'd moved back. If it wasn't for Sean's son he would have departed sooner rather than later. Marcus had formed a close bond with Dylan as he'd always wanted children but being gay he knew this was not likely to happen.
Aiden Lester was a colleague of Marcus Dent at the Weatherfield General. Marcus brought him to the Rovers Return in May 2012 and introduced him to Maria Connor, intent on getting them together, unaware that Aiden was gay. When Maria made a move on Aiden, he revealed his sexuality to her and a shocked Marcus, and explained that he had been under the impression that Marcus was interested in him. Marcus later consoled Aiden when his father reacted badly to the fact that he had turned out gay, much to the annoyance of Marcus' boyfriend Sean. Sean's jealousy caused Marcus to storm out and go for a drink with Aiden. However, when Aiden tried to kiss Marcus he gave him the brush-off, saying that he loved Sean, despite their argument. When Marcus never returned home the same evening, instead deciding to sleep on Maria's couch, Sean assumed that he had slept with Aiden, leading to them splitting up due to Sean's insecurities. Aiden and Marcus remained friends and eventually began dating. Eileen Grimshaw invited the couple for dinner, thinking Sean wouldn't be there as he had told them he had a 'date.' Sean lied so he could big-note himself as there was nobody that he was involved with. Later that night, Sean returned home early from his 'date' while Aiden and Marcus were still there.
Sean then got drunk and embarrassed himself by making snide remarks about Aiden, causing tensions to rise between the two, although Sean later apologised.
Marcus and Maria later began to develop feelings for each other, although they initially ignored these feelings. When Aiden was offered a job promotion in London, he planned to ask Marcus to move with him. Maria offered to sound him out and was pleased when Marcus said he didn't miss London and wouldn't like to leave friends. Maria told Aiden who put the job offer in the bin. However, a guilty Maria recovered it and put it in with Marcus's post. When Marcus found it he realised Maria had been meddling and confronted her. They gave in to their feelings and slept together. The following day, Marcus regretted this and chose to move with Aiden instead of staying with Maria, but got cold feet and lied to Aiden that he was still in love with Sean. Aiden then left alone for London.
Marcus and Maria next had to face the wrath of Jason because stoopid Sean had disclosed to Jason that Maria had dumped him. Marcus and Maria declared they were now a couple.
Jason and Maria / Sean and Marcus were split asunder.
By Christmas Marcus Dent's parents had given approval of Maria in the hope that their son Marcus was now going straight.
Things between Sean and Marcus have not improved in 2013 although when we last saw them on screen at least Marcus was trying to help Sean find a new man to date. But as we know it would be a very brave or foolhardy man that would take on Sean!
Maria and Marcus have been intermittently looking after Sunita and Dev's kids after Sunita was killed in the Rovers Return fire that shocked the residents of Corrie. But it seems that Marcus's heterosexual lifestyle is about to come unstuck. After all this is a soap opera we're discussing!
AND NOW . . . THE NORRIS FACTOR!
The general public and contributors to this blog have given 95% approval rating for the pairing of Maria and Marcus even though a few gay men have voiced their opinion that this heterosexual pairing was not to their liking. One of my contributors, who is a gay man living in Paris with his now male partner, said that this storyline mirrored his life. He said at the age of 22 he suddenly found himself in a sexual relationship with a woman. It was something he had tried to understand but eventually he said it was a case of "the heart wants what the heart wants." Charlie Condou has also expressed his opinion on the storyline having similarly had a relationship with a woman when he was younger. I think the writers of Corrie are now poised to make Marcus and Maria go through some very tough times. I just hope for the sake of viewers they don't have Marcus move back to a relationship with Sean after all that would be a complete travesty after what's transpired to date...Sean's not the only gay in the village...it's about time Norris was allowed to unleash his inner gay!

I think one of the reasons that Marcus and Maria as a couple get so little disapproval is that both Marcus and Maria and nice people and nice characters, they make a cute couple and they have a sweet friendship that evolved into something more.

ReplyDeleteThat is very true, plus I think that compared to Sean, Maria is an absolute A+++ angel.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure where the relationship is going to go, we had that brief scene of Maria talking about having another child so her son can have a brother or sister but apart from that there have not been any hints as to what is going to happen. In fact there hasn't been much of anything when it comes to M&M. I hope they come back to the front soon otherwise they are going to be forgotten.
