Meet ‘Threesome’ and ‘Doctor Who’ writer Tom MacRae who based his comedy on Charlie Condou’s family situation

Series one of the acclaimed Threesome slipped onto our screens last October without a huge amount of publicity, it could be said, on the part of Comedy Central. Yet despite this, the comedy has gone on to develop a solid fan base, earning itself a well-deserved second series in the process…

The formula of the show is simple: Take three friends - one couple and their gay flatmate. Sprinkle liberally with lots of drink and drugs, and then shake things up rigorously with one accidental intoxicated threesome. The result? One woman made pregnant by her gay flatmate, and one very awkward situation. Welcome to the world of Alice, Mitch and Ritchie.

The man behind the concept of the series is Tom MacRae, BAFTA nominated screenwriter, award winning children’s author, successful playwright and to cap it all a massive fan and occasional writer of Dr Who - an honour which has turned him into a ‘minor celebrity’ amongst fans of the long-standing British sci-fi show.

The second helping of the comedy continues from where the first one left off, which saw Alice giving birth to Mitch’s baby. But while series one of the comedy covers roughly nine months of story time (the preconception, the conception and then the birth), series two takes part in a much shorter timescale, dealing with the weeks immediately after the birth.

Tom was mentored by no other than Russell T Davies, with the Queer as Folk writer teaching him the skill of being ‘very warm and cheeky at the same time’. He’s also good friends with Guardian writer, gay activist and actor Charlie Condou, who spoke to Tom while he was writing about his unusual experience of parenting.

Series two of Threesome is on UK Comedy Central on Monday 1 October at 9.30pm.

UK LGBT community
encouraged to think about becoming parents
The number of same-sex couples and individuals having children is on the increase, according to the organisers of this year’s Alternative Parenting Show.
Square Peg Media, the company running this month’s event say the increasingly visibility of LGBT parents in society, is encouraging more and more same-sex couples to think about having children.
Managing Director Sarah Garrett said: “This is our third year offering advice and information to LGBTs, and in such little time it’s amazing how many people who never imagined they would be able to have kids have made that step.
Ms Smith added: “The visibility of more LGBT parents has helped others believe it is possible. We are really proud when people who came to our first show told us about their success stories.”
With over 50 exhibitors, including the London Women’s Clinic, legal team Dawson Cornwell, and the British Surrogacy Centre, Ms Smith says there is more expert advice at this year’s show than ever before.
Attendees can learn how to navigate through the nature of alternative parenting, including advice on surrogacy, fertility, co-parenting, adoption and legal information.
Gay Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou will be sharing his co-parenting experiences in a seminar hosted by the UK’s largest gay rights charity, Stonewall.
All proceeds from tickets and seminars will go direct to the charity’s campaign to help eradicate bullying for the children of same-sex parents.
The Alternative Parenting Show takes place on Saturday 15 September at Grand Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden in London.
