Stars from Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale took to Twitter today to congratulate couples who were finally allowed to marry
The stars came out for gay marriage on Twitter today

Les Dennis, Shane Richie and other soap stars have tweeted congratulations towards gay couples marrying today.

Gay couples were finally able to get married after the law changed at midnight to allow same sex couples to legally tie the knot.

Former Queen Vic landlord and current EastEnders star Shane Richie led the tributes, tweeting: "Big congrats to any gay & lesbian couples who are getting hitched this weekend. LOVE really does conquer all xxxx."

Les Dennis - who recently joined Coronation Street as burglar Michael - joined in writing on the social networking site: "If you're Gay and getting married today it's appropriate that the clocks go forward. We are no longer in the Dark Ages. Congratulations."

While Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou - who plays Marcus in the ITV soap - joked that now marriage was mandatory for all gay people, tweeting: "Gays, it is now your duty to get married. Whether you want to or not."

Emmerdale's Michelle Hardwick - who plays vet Vanessa Woodfield - wrote: "Congratulations to all the same sex couples saying 'I do' today in England & Wales.... #equalmarriage"
