Charlie Condou:
‘There’s a complacency about gay rights in UK’

Charlie Condou talks about Love & Marriage

Coronation Street star Charlie Condou has said he believes there is a complacency about gay rights among the younger gay generation in the UK.

Speaking exclusively to Attitude in our special Love & Marriage issue, the actor argues that recent events in Russia prove how far the fight for gay rights still has to go.

“I can’t believe what is happening in Russia,” the 41-year-old said. ”But it throws up an important point; that there’s a complacency about gay rights in the UK, especially among the younger generation who take it for granted that they can have boyfriends or get married or walk down Old Compton Street hand in hand.

“We can’t be complacent. There is so much prejudice and hatred still out there that we have to keep fighting,” he added.

“What’s happening in Russia proves how far we have to go.”

Coronation Street:
Charlie Condou says “Marcus might return”
March 27th, 2014
by Lynn Connolly.

Coronation Street star Charlie Condou will soon be filming his last scenes as Marcus Dent, who has of course recently had a fling with Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley) which Marcus’s girlfriend Maria Connor (Samia Ghadie) found out about when she caught them in a compromising position…

And it’s that storyline that will herald Marcus’ departure from the street as he’s shunned by his friends and the street’s residents over his betrayal of Maria.

However, Charlie told Lorraine Kelly on her breakfast show this morning that as his character isn’t being killed off, he could return at some point.

He explained, “I’ve got a bit more time [on the show]. I’m not leaving until June, so I think I’m onscreen until August…

“They [the show’s writers] told me that nothing hideous is going to happen to Marcus.

“They’re leaving the door open for me, so hopefully I can come back!”

However, he added that though he hasn’t got any other work lined up as yet, he hopes that his post-Corrie career can be as successful as former cast member Katherine Kelly’s has been.

He said, “You look at people like Kath Kelly who’s in Mr Selfridge now, and Julie Hesmondhalgh who’s just left and is now doing so many things…

“Hopefully there’ll be life after Corrie.”
