Coronation Street's Izzy Armstrong honoured at Creative Diversity Awards

Back at the end of September, we invited you to vote in the annual awards run by the Creative Diversity Network. Our award was in the soaps category and readers were asked to pick a winner who best reflected our richly varied society. From the six series in contention, the winner you chose was Coronation Street, which was nominated for the storylines that featured wheelchair-user Izzy Armstrong, as played by Cherylee Houston. Izzy has had a high-profile year on the ITV1 soap thanks to her ongoing relationship with ex-soldier Gary Windass (Mikey North). Earlier in 2012, the character – who like the actress that plays her has the rare connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome – miscarried the baby she was expecting with Gary. The show’s sensitive handling of Izzy’s desire to be a parent particularly resonated with the panel that drew up the shortlist. Although actors with disabilities have appeared briefly in Coronation Street before, most notably Emily’s niece Freda (played by deaf actress Ali Briggs), Izzy is the first full-time disabled character in the show’s 52-year history. 

At the ceremony, which was held on Thursday 15 November at London’s Hackney Empire, Houston – who was accompanied by fellow Street star Charlie Condou (Marcus Dent) – acknowledged the support and opportunities she’d been given since making her debut on the show in 2010.
