Corrie star Charlie Condou: I always wanted to be a dad

Actor Charlie Condou plays Marcus Dent in Coronation Street. He has two children with his friend Catherine and partner Cameron.

My grandmother had lymphatic cancer and died when I was six. I remember it being a difficult time. It was really tough for my mum – it’s one of my first memories. She really struggled with it, which was the first time I ever saw my mum very upset.

My parents ran restaurants – we moved to Soho when I was in my teens. I began going to nightclubs earlier than I might have done – I started going to The Wag when I was 14. I was out most nights.

I’d always wanted to be an actor and left school at 18. I got a part in a TV series straight away but worked in my parents’ restaurant as a waiter between jobs. I was the first performer in the family. My parents were always very supportive about my ambitions. They knew there’s a huge unemployment rate in acting and made sure I got my A-levels.

I have two children with Catherine, a friend of mine. Me and my partner, Cameron, co-parent with her. I’d always wanted to be a dad. When I came out, my mum was great about it but she was worried because she knew I wanted to be a dad and thought that might not happen now. I knew it would be more complicated for me being gay but I was determined I’d become a parent. Catherine’s biological clock was ticking, she hadn't met Mr Right, so we had a conversation about bringing up kids together.

There are always challenges to parenting but we were forced to talk about every possibility so there have been very few surprises. There have been occasional disagreements. When our daughter, Georgia, was a baby we were all staying in the same hotel room. She wouldn't sleep. Catherine thought it was teething, I thought it was wind, Cameron thought she was hungry. Cameron suggested feeding her because, if she wasn't hungry, she wouldn't eat. She drained the bottle and went to sleep. So he went to bed feeling very smug.

The benefits to having three of us are there’s always someone on hand to make sure the kids are alright. They live between two homes. We have them half the week, Catherine has them the other half. We live around the corner so we can all see each other when we want.

The reaction from people has been good. I wrote a newspaper column about being a parent and linked to it on Twitter. I never had a bad response. We’re not the first gay parents and we won’t be the last. We’re probably among the most visible in this country, other than Elton John and David Furnish.

I don’t have time to worry about what people think about my family as I'm too busy trying to bring up healthy, responsible human beings. Coronation Street has given me a profile and an opportunity for people to see that parenting is parenting, regardless of your sexuality. When I’m changing nappies or telling my daughter to stop watching Barbie DVDs, I’m not thinking about being ‘a gay parent’ – I'm just a parent.

The number of gay parents in Britain has tripled in the past two years. I'm really pleased I might have played a small part in that. It’s now seen as being normal.
