CORONATION STREET UPDATES:
Marcus and Maria attend the wedding reception of two of Marcus's gay friends. Marcus finally stands his ground and announces to his gay friends that he's in love with Maria and that they are in a relationship. They gays scoff at the idea! YES, scoff!!! Of course Sean is relishing the thought that these two will soon split apart and he plays the "give it time" card.
Maria is a bit taken aback that Marcus still identifies as a gay man. She thinks it somehow undermines what their relationship means. Marcus tries to alleviate her fears. They leave the reception but decide to go back to the Rovers pub to clear the air before heading home.
Back at the Rovers, in front of their friends, Marcus and Maria have a small moment of dramatic tension (complete with knitting of brows and eye rolling) and when they realise Adam Blease (the much loved Corrie extra and one of my favourite blog followers), is listening-in, they take their discussion outside.
More angst ensues when they retire to the beer garden. There is a long discussion about how they are both feeling, and where the relationship may be headed, followed by a tender moment when Marcus explains to Maria about gay activist and singer Tom Robinson. Tom fell in love with a woman and married her which upset the gay community no end! Maria is still fraught with doubts. But the ever pragmatic and husband-like Marcus kisses her and departs to collect Liam (Maria's son).

A minor celebrity in the UK, Robinson made headlines in the ’90s, when the tabloids discovered he was married to a woman and had 2 kids. He continues to classify himself as a “gay man who fell in love with a woman.”
itsjemmabond: I've just seen Coronation Street, and Tom was mentioned in tonight's episode. Apparently, despite everything he sang here, he married a woman, and the gay community went mad...
