MARCUS, SET, GO!
February 20, 2013
NB The following edited article is for the Canadian British Isles Convention held in Toronto in early March 2013. I have included it here for fans.
On Your Marcus, Set, Go!
The identity of this year’s guest Coronation Street star scheduled to appear at Toronto’s revamped British Isles Show 8-10 March (at the International Centre, Mississauga) has been announced. Fans will be thrilled to welcome actor Charlie Condou (Marcus Dent) to Canada.
On his Twitter account Charlie Condou describes himself as “Actor, Father, Twat”. In British English, the word “twat” has two meanings; one is vulgar and the other is a mild euphemism for someone who is an idiot. Charlie is calling himself an idiot, which may be his way of expressing modesty. Maybe Charlie is a little modest. He is certainly intelligent and personable. And gay. Not just gay but, an advocate for gay causes. Charlie is a strong supporter of gay parenting. He always had a burning desire to be a dad and when, at a young age, he discovered his sexuality, the problem of how he was going to ever be a dad tormented him. Then Charlie met a woman called Catherine Kanter. They became great friends – but only friends. It was Catherine who first suggested they make a baby together. The process took a year and three cycles of IVF but eventually Catherine became pregnant with Charlie’s child.
The Canadian Connection
By this time Charlie had already met his Canadian partner Cameron Laux and the two had set up home together. Catherine moved into the couple’s home as she neared the end of her pregnancy and gave birth, by Caesarian Section, to a baby girl. Catherine stayed in Charlie and Cameron’s home for another three months while she breast-fed the baby.
Three of Us – and Baby Makes Four
The baby, called “Georgia” has three parents; mother Catherine, father Charlie and male partner Cameron. Charlie described the arrangement in his British newspaper column “The Three of Us”, saying “what’s important is the parenting, not the fact that our daughter has three parents”. Georgia now spends half her time with Charlie and Cameron and the other half with her mother Catherine.
And Then There Were Five
Charlie and Catherine repeated the IVF procedure a couple of years later and produced a son called Hal.
300 km Commute
Charlie, Cameron and Catherine live in London but Charlie’s job is, of course, in Manchester, at Granada Studios where he plays Marcus Dent on Coronation Street. Charlie commutes by train and taxi between home and work – a distance of well over three hundred kilometres each way.
AC/DC
The strangest thing about Marcus Dent is the sudden switch in his sexuality. Corrie fans previously knew Marcus as the gay partner of Sean Tully but were shocked when he then fell in love with Maria Connor. According to Charlie Condou, this is art imitating life. When Charlie was in his twenties and had already come to terms with his own homosexuality, he met and dated a woman. The dating blossomed into a relationship that lasted a full five months and, in Charlie’s own words, “we had a good sex life and I definitely fancied her”. “Sometimes” explained Charlie, “people fall in love with the person rather than the person’s gender”.
American Movie Star
Charlie’s acting career began when he was just 12 years old. He earned a part in an American movie called “The Key to Rebecca” based on a book by British author Ken Follett. Charlie played alongside actors of the calibre of David Soul and Cliff Robertson. The film was made in 1985 as a made-for-TV, 2-part, 4-hour production filmed in Tunisia. His TV career continued with a string of performances in shows like “Robin of Sherwood”, “A Sense of Guilt” and “Every Breath You Take”. In “Every Breath You Take” Charlie appeared with Connie Booth, the American-born actress who was once married to John Cleese.
Just a Job Folks
Following a continuous and successful run in a variety of roles, he joined the cast of Coronation Street in the summer of 2007. The role was not to last very long. Describing himself as a “jobbing actor” he made the decision to move on in 2008 to pursue other lucrative career opportunities. But, three years later, Charlie was tempted to return to the cobbles with a promise he would be involved in a major gay-themed storyline in which his character would marry fellow on-and-off-screen gay Sean Tully. It didn't materialise and Charlie was promised a new, exciting storyline that might (and, indeed, did) eclipse Sean Tully. Charlie will be making several appearances at the 2013 British Isles Show. Be sure to come and meet him.

What are the advantages and challenges of being an alternative family?
Article from Guardian.Co.UK, Wednesday 20 February 2013
Actors Charlie Condou and Sophie Ward spoke about their experiences of being gay parents at a special lunchtime talk run by international banking group Societe Generale Actors Charlie Condou and Sophie Ward were the special guests at an event that took place at the beginning of February at the London headquarters of international banking group, Societe Generale. The company's UK LGB network group had invited them to speak at its first key event of 2013, a lunchtime talk on the advantages and challenges of being an alternative family. Both Charlie and Sophie, who live with same-sex partners and have children, spoke about the experience of being a gay parent. Condou – known to millions for his role as Marcus Dent in Coronation Street – talked about becoming a father with his partner and a close female friend. The three co-parents now share the upbringing of a young girl and boy. Ward was previously married to a man, with whom she had two sons. In the late 1990s, however, she left her husband after falling in love with a woman and realising that she was gay. This put her private life into the headlines, and she talked about the experience as well as how she handled the situation with her sons, who remained with her and her new partner. After their talks, the duo took questions from the audience, with Societe Generale staff asking them about school bullying, the legal issues concerned with gay parenthood and whether either had experienced prejudice. The event was partly the idea of Square Peg Media, which not only publishes Out In The City but also organises the annual Alternative Parenting Show, and is currently helping to raise awareness around alternative parenting with LGBT and family networks.
