The cast of Coronation Street has been split by a huge rift between two of the soap’s biggest stars. Former on-screen lovers Charlie Condou and Antony Cotton only speak to each other now when they really have to. Now their animosity has spread through the Corrie staff and is set to continue after popular Charlie, who plays Marcus Dent, signed a new two-year contract to stay on the ITV soap. A source said last night: “It is an open secret that Antony and Charlie do not see eye to eye. "There is a real divide throughout the cast and crew, with some people Team Condou and a few Team Cotton. “They are both very different people and whereas Antony is quite showbizzy, Charlie is quite quiet and down to earth. They simply rub each other up the wrong way.” Things came to a head recently, when Charlie and Antony were booked to appear alongside one another on Paddy McGuiness’ "Show And Telly" – but sources close to Charlie say he was told he was not needed two days before filming. He was replaced by former Dancing On Ice star and fellow Corrie actor, Chris Fountain. A source said: “Antony and Charlie were due to appear on Paddy’s "Show And Telly" but two days before filming Charlie was told he would no longer be required. “Although the official reason was because the bookers wanted a younger mix of guests, Charlie feels there was another problem. “Charlie was gutted because he was appearing to raise money for The Albert Kennedy Trust, and didn't want to let them down.” Last month, nearly three million viewers saw Antony and Chris win the ITV1 festive special, raising £20,000 for The Terrence Higgins Trust and British Heart Foundation respectively. Off camera, while Charlie follows Antony, 37, on Twitter, the former I'm A Celebrity contestant does not return the compliment. Charlie’s character is currently in his first straight romance, dating Maria Connor, played by Samia Ghadie, who is about to appear on this year’s Dancing on Ice. Contrary to reports, last month Charlie, 39, secured an improved two-year deal with Corrie bosses. The actor, who has two children with his partner Cameron Laux, first joined the long-running soap in 2007 for a year, before returning in 2011 to rekindle his relationship with knicker factory worker, Sean Tully, played by Antony. A source added: “Charlie is delighted. “He spoke to producers who told him they have big plans for his character, and Marcus will be at the heart of some explosive story lines.” Last night a Coronation Street spokesman declined to comment on their off-camera friendship but said: “On set they have a great, professional relationship.”
