Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou talks about being a gay parent
Thursday, Sep 26 2013 WRITTEN BY Jayne Savva
They say three's a crowd, but when it comes to parenting, is it the more the merrier? Corrie's Charlie tells Bestdaily about his remarkable family…
FOR four-year-old Georgia there's nothing extraordinary about having three parents. Not only does she have her biological dad Charlie Condou and mum Catherine Kanter, but also the man she affectionately calls "Wah-Wah" - Charlie's long term partner Cameron Laux. This parenting trio came about after best friends Charlie and Catherine made a pact nearly a decade ago to ensure neither of them missed out on having a family. They agreed one evening over dinner that if Catherine hadn't met a partner by the time she reached 40, they would become parents together. "Neither of us were joking," explains 40-year-old Charlie. "As Catherine's birthday loomed we started seriously investigating the options. Although by that stage I was in a long term relationship with Cameron, Catherine hadn't met Mr Right and none of us wanted to let the chance to be parents pass us by." Because of their unusual circumstances 45-year-old Catherine and Charlie felt adoption wasn't an option. So, both Georgia and her brother Hal, now 19 months were conceived through IVF. "I'd know since I was aged 13 that I wanted to have children myself, says Charlie. "When came out as gay aged 18, my parents were very supportive, their only worry was whether I would get to fulfill my dream of becoming a parent. But I didn't see my sexuality as an obstacle". Charlie and Cameron, 49, are part of a growing army of gay parents as the number of same-sex couples with children has tripled in the UK from 4,000 to 12,000 in the past two years. Like many families embarking on IVF, Charlie and Catherine found the process, which can cost upwards of £3,000 for each cycle, both tiring and expensive. It took four attempts and nearly two years before Catherine became pregnant with Georgia. Charlie said: "It was far from plain sailing. We had three rounds of IVF, none of which worked and we couldn't afford to go on. "We were about to give up hope when Catherine's parents agreed to lend us the money for a fourth round. As we waited for the results I remember thinking 'How can I comfort her if it hasn't worked?' Luckily the test was positive." Despite not being a conventional couple Charlie offered as much support to Catherine, who is currently single, as possible during her pregnancy. He says: "There is no denying it was hard for Catherine. I always had Cameron to share any fears or worries with but I was very aware that Catherine was getting into bed on her own at night. "
Charlie and Cameron became parents thanks to Charlie's friend Catherine
Charlie believes that the key to his modern family's success is good communication. All three parents sat down before going ahead with the IVF to talk through their values and beliefs. He explains: "We all wanted to be on the same page when it came to politics, schooling and discipline. Now, because we had those conversations at that point, we communicate really well. The three of us are best friends. We work hard to never undermine each other." As Catherine needed an emergency caesarean, only Charlie was able to welcome their daughter in August 2009. Hal was born by elective caesarean in January 2012 and all three parents were present at the birth. While some would find this family set up hard to understand, Charlie insists there are many advantages. He said: "A few weeks after Georgia was born I realised having three of you really lightens the load. "There was a moment when Catherine was sleeping, I was cooking dinner and Cameron was feeding Georgia and I thought, 'We are so lucky'. We've never needed a nanny, because we can divide the child care between the three of us." Surprisingly, Charlie says he's encountered very little criticism. "The only people who have ever seemed uncomfortable with our decision are a handful of gay friends," he says. "Some feel that Cameron and I are trying too hard to conform to a traditional family life". Now the children divide their time between Catherine's home and Charlie and Cameron's who live a short train ride away in north London. Charlie says: "After both births Catherine moved in with us for the first four months, because that made sense. All three of us would change nappies, help with feeds and get up in the night. "Now although we live separately we are always in and our of each other's houses. We celebrate important occasions like Christmas and birthdays together and go on holiday. This summer all of us went to the Canary Islands." With their family of five now complete, Charlie is optimistic about the future. He believes the family will be able to offer long term security and love. "Of course I worry about my children doing well at school and getting on in life – but that's nothing to do with our family set up," he insists. "Georgia and Hal have grown up with two daddies and Georgia is already aware not all families are the same. In our area there are other same sex parents and also single mums. And as every mum and dad knows there's no such things as a 'normal'."
