Broadchurch and Corrie big winners at the Freesat Awards in a good night for ITV

The stars of the small screen gathered at One Mayfair last night for the Freesat Awards with Broadchurch, Corrie, Twenty Twelve and Ant and Dec among the winners

ITV hit drama Broadchurch scooped 'Best of British: TV Programme or Series' at last night's fifth annual Freesat Awards. The channel proved to be big winners on the night, taking home ‘Freesat Channel of the Year' with judges praising the channel for discovering a ‘new class and confidence’ in its programming, resulting in a ‘resurgence of break out hits and high end drama’.

BBC Two’s popular comedy Twenty Twelve, won ‘Best TV Sitcom’, while other notable wins included BBC One’s coverage of The London 2012 Olympics for ‘Best Live TV Programme or Series,’ and The Food Network UK was awarded ‘Best Specialist Channel’. BBC 5 live was recognised for ‘Best News Channel of the Year’.

The British public also got to have their say in two categories, TV Personality and Best British Soap – showing their support for Ant and Dec and Coronation Street respectively, who bagged awards.

Freesat Managing Director, Emma Scott said: “Tonight was a fantastic celebration of everything that is truly great about British TV. We paid homage to the world-beating creative talent behind the unique channels and groundbreaking programming that I’m proud to say make up the Freesat service. Congratulations to all the worthy winners which we are incredibly proud to be able to recognise year on year.”

Now in its fifth year, the Freesat Awards celebrate the quality and variety of programming on offer by the subscription-free satellite TV service. A judging panel made up of media industry heavyweights, chaired by journalist Neil Midgley, deliberated on the best in programming and channels. Actress and comedian Sally Phillips, best known for her roles in Miranda and Smack the Pony, hosted the event which was attended by 250 VIPs from the world of broadcast entertainment. Stars who turned out on the night included, the cast of Coronation Street, Broadchurch, John Inverdale, Chris Eubank and Kate Garraway. The 2013 Awards saw 52 nominees competing across ten categories. Brand new awards this year included Best TV Sitcom, Best Factual TV Programme or Series and Best Coverage for a Major News Event.

A brand new film about gay parents, focusing on families from the UK has been commissioned by Square Peg Media. The film is being made by Violet Productions and will shoot on location around the UK this summer before being shown worldwide at Gay festivals in 2014. The film is in production stages at the moment with Violet Productions inviting any potential gay parents to share their stories. The documentary aims to highlight the increasing prevalence of gay families in the UK, understanding the challenges, the joys and the realities that come with bringing up a family as same-sex parents. Violet Productions is headed up by Jay Hunt, who worked in television as a producer/director for 20 years before setting up her own company in 2008. The commissioners, Square Peg Media are the publishers of gay magazines G3 and Out in the City, as well as the organisers of the European Diversity Awards and the Alternative Parenting Show, for which actors Charlie Condou and Sophie Ward are the ambassadors. AZEALIA BANKS HAS A GO AT LILY ALLEN AND FAMILY
Eww! How disgustingly vile!!!
I'm not sure why Azealia Banks put on grumpy pants yesterday, but she took her bad day out on the totally lovely Lily Allen!!! She randomly BLASTED Lily Allen Rose Cooper's husband on Twitter, saying he looked like a thumb, but Lily the F*** You singer was having none of that!!! She fired back, calling Azealia a one-hit-wonder who might need to beef up her security should they ever meet again in real life. The Yung Rapunxel rapper wasn't done, though. Azealia went one to call the 28-year-old Brit a coke-addict, and called her children "ugly"!!!
See the horrible tweeting frenzy for yourself on the previous blog post "War Of The Roses" - Tom.
