National Television Awards 2012: Coronation Street wins Best Serial Drama

The cast of Corrie were delighted to pick up the coveted gong at tonight’s NTAs in London, and dedicated the award to late star Betty Driver and creator Tony Warren.

Coronation Street was awarded the top award of the night, Best Serial Drama, at the National Television Awards in London tonight. The cast of the soap were delighted and rushed to hug and congratulate each other, before running up on stage to collect their gong. Sally Dynevor, the actress who plays the role of Sally Webster in the popular soap, accepted the award off Paul O’Grady and said: "Thank you so much for this, thank you everybody whose voted for Coronation Street. “We’ve had an amazing couple of years, we’ve had fantastic storylines, we’ve got a great bunch of writers.” She added: “This one is for Betty Driver,” paying tribute to the late Corrie star, who died aged 91 in October last year. Phil Collinson, the producer of Coronation Street, added: “Betty was a marvel. She was in the show for 42 years and was a wonderful woman. She’d have been so proud.”The producer then went on to dedicate the gong to Tony Warren, the award-winning scriptwriter who created Coronation Street 51 years ago, calling him an “amazing man”. Corrie had gone up against other TV favourites including EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks for the title of Best Serial Drama. Each and every one of the soap nominees has enjoyed a successful year - but there could only be one winner on the night. The last 12 months has seen viewers gripped by Corrie storylines which have included Carla’s harrowing rape, Sophie and Sian’s wedding drama, and show favourite Becky McDonald leaving the cobbles. Coronation Street was nominated for four gongs in total at this year’s NTAs; as well as best Serial Drama, the soap was also up for Best Serial Drama Performance (Katherine Kelly), best Serial Drama Performance (Alison King) and best Newcomer (Chris Fountain). Katherine Kelly landed the title of Best Serial Drama Performance, for playing troublesome but loveable character Becky McDonald.
