Devoted dad Charlie Condou:
Jul 09, 2014
Devoted dad Charlie Condou has spoken to ITV's Good Morning Britain about the terror of discovering his newborn son Hal - now a healthy toddler - had a collapsed lung.
"He had a week in intensive care when he was born and that's a horrible time for any parent," revealed the popular Corrie star, who also has four-year-old daughter Georgia.
"We knew fairly quickly he was going to be okay but the last thing you want to see is your newborn in intensive care with tubes and on morphine. He's absolutely fine now." After seven years on the cobbles as midwife Marcus Dent, actor Charlie is quitting the Manchester soap.
"It was really sad and a difficult decision," he told the show. "But I'm based in London... my kids, my partner, my family..."I think once I'd made the decision I realised it had to be sooner rather than later."
Marcus will leave Weatherfield after the breakdown of his relationship with manipulative Todd Grimshaw. Fortunately for fans, the door has been left open for the 41-year-old star to return.

Charlie Condou has opened up about his exit from Coronation Street

The star - who left the soap this month after a dramatic storyline which saw him cheat on girlfriend Maria with a man - opened up about his time on the long-running programme during an interview on Good Morning Britain. "It was a really sad and difficult decision to make but I never planned on being there forever and ever," he said. "I'm based in London, my kids are in London, my partner, my family… I think once I'd made the decision to go I realised it had to be sooner rather than later so it was sad but I felt like it was the right thing to do."
The actor, who has played Marcus for seven years, said he never planned on being there forever

Marcus embarked on a relationship with Maria in the show, despite being openly gay, and then cheated

The actor went on to reveal that he has been overwhelmed with the amount of love he's been getting from fans of the show, especially the gay community. He said: "[The reaction] has been overwhelmingly positive. "The gay community seem to really like Marcus and that's goof. Marcus is a really nice guy so generally people are really nice about him, I don't get any abuse in the street." He added: "A couple of comments when I cheated on Maria but other than it's been good."
Charlie has a long-term partner and two children in real life

And speaking of his set up in real life, the star - who is openly gay and has two children with his boyfriend, Cameron Laux - said that he is extremely happy and is happy gay families are becoming more common these days.“We get no prejudice at all, I’m very lucky that we live in London so it’s a very cosmopolitan neighbourhood that we’re in," he said. "The amount of same sex families over the last two years have tripled in this country so while I don’t like to refer to ourselves as a trend, I think in a lot of ways it is becoming more and more common.”

GOOD MORNING BRITAIN
Charlie Condou made his first appearance in 'Coronation Street' all the way back in 2007. Playing unlucky-in-love Marcus Dent, Condou was popular with viewers due to his relationship with Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) and his strong friendship with Maria Connor (Samia Ghadie). Condou left the soap after a year, only to return in 2011 when he was promised a more prominent role in the show, and he has since been in the middle of some big storylines. Over the last three years we've seen Marcus reunite with his old flame Sean, begin a heterosexual relationship with his friend Maria and have an affair with Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley), however, he's now set to say goodbye to the soap again. With Condou preparing to walk away from the Corrie cobbles, how does he reflect on his time on the show? The actor told 'Good Morning Britain', "It's been brilliant. I've had a fantastic time and I've loved it, particularly with everything that's happened with Marcus being a gay man and then suddenly falling in love with a woman and, of course, leaving the woman for another man. It's been complex." Since joining the show seven years ago, viewers have embraced Charlie and have reacted positively towards his character. The actor explained "It's been overwhelmingly positive. The gay community seem to really like Marcus so that's good. Marcus is a really nice guy so generally people are really nice about him. I don't get any abuse on the street or anything like that." While many actors end up staying on soaps for years, Charlie revealed that it was never his intention to remain on 'Coronation Street' for a long time. "It was really sad and a difficult decision to make, but I never planned on being there forever," he explained. "I went back for just three months and they asked me to stay. Before I knew it I was there for another three and a half years. "Once I made the decision to go I think I realised that it had to be sooner rather than later, so it was sad, but it felt like the right thing to do." Although the actor shared his excitement to move on to new projects and to try new things, he did tease that we may not have seen the end of Marcus Dent, and that there's potential for him to return to the soap. "They were really nice, they said they've left the door open for me, so you never know what might happen in the future." As show bosses have teased that the character's exit will divide the street, it seems like the repercussions of Charlie's decision to leave the show will continue on, even after Marcus has walked away from Weatherfield.
