HE’S taken time out from acting to help bring up his daughter with his real-life boyfriend.
So when Charlie Condou was asked back on Coronation Street to reprise his role as Marcus Dent in a gay dad storyline, he was thrilled to find that art was mirroring life.
Charlie has returned as hospital midwife Marcus Dent after three years away.
with pal Violet Wilson – after she is injured in a car crash. “I think it’s a great storyline,” says Charlie, 38. “Obviously I would because of my personal situation, but I also think it’s really relevant.
“I feel like I’m on-trend all of a sudden! Elton and David have done it, and Rufus Wainwright and Ricky Martin. It’s very fashionable to be a gay dad
“It’s a great thing to have on TV, especially with a soap like Coronation Street which reaches so many people.”
Charlie, who is bringing up two-year-old Georgia Mae with his boyfriend of seven years Cameron Laux, adds: “It’s a unique situation Sean and Marcus are in, and I’m in with Cameron. Because of that some viewers might be shocked.
“But I think controversial storylines like this are important because, without realising it, people become used to it and it becomes normal, for want of a better word.”
Charlie lives in Islington, North London, with freelance publisher Cameron. Georgia Mae spends half her time with the couple and half with her mother, actress Catherine Kanter.
The decision to have a baby with Catherine through IVF treatment was one Charlie thought long and hard about. They have been friends a long time and years ago, after she broke up with a boyfriend, they joked that if she reached 40 and was still single they would have a child together.
As her 40th approached they talked about it again – this time more seriously.
“I was in a lucky place in that my relationship was very stable, I had a nice house and financially we were okay. It felt like a good time to do it,” he says.
“It took a bit of time for Cameron to get his head around it but knew how much I wanted to do it and he’s a great dad.”

The event, which was supported by Societe Generale and Square Peg Media, raised over £20,000 for Stonewall's Education for All campaign, which tackles homophobic bullying in schools and works to make schools inclusive to children from all families.
Guests - including Will Young, Sue Perkins, Stephen K. Amos, Jane Hill and Charlie Condou - enjoyed speeches from Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill, Gok Wan and Vincent Francois, Chair of the LGB network at Societe Generale.
A raffle, drawn by Jodie Harsh, was followed by Kensington Roof Garden's gay-themed club night 'Summer Outing on the Roof' immediately after the event.
Catherine Bosworth, Stonewall Director of Fundraising said: "This is our third Summer Party at the Roof Gardens, and was another success, raising funds for our Education for All campaign to tackle homophobic bullying and promote an inclusive learning environment for all."
Coronation Street: Charlie Condou, Anthony Cotton and Catherine Tyldesley defend Michelle Collins’ Manchester accent!
June 21st, 2011 by Lisa McGarry
Coronation Streets stars Anthony Cotton and Catherine Tyldesley have defended Michelle Collins’ much criticised Manchester accent.
The former Eastenders actress has caused quite a stir since joining Corrie last week, and many viewers have hit out at the Lancashire dialect she has adopted when playing new Rovers Return manager Stella Price.
It had been reported yesterday that her fellow ITV stars were also unhappy with her vocal performance but last night Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully, defended the star, tweeting:
“Contrary to rumour, the cast and crew of Coronation Street have far better things to do than stand by idly gossiping about Michelle Collins.
“What matters far more than her accent (which is great IMO) is the character she is playing.
“Say what you want about Miss Collins… she’s so very watchable. And for that reason, this new family is exciting and intriguing! (sic)”
Catherine Tyldesley, who plays Stella’s daughter Eva, also waded into the row, saying that she thinks Collins is doing an ‘amazing job’ with the role.
She said: “There is absolutely nothing wrong with her accent from my point of view and she’s doing an amazing job.”
Charlie Condou, who plays Marcus Dent, said: “I haven’t heard one member of the cast complain about her.”
Executive producer Phil Collinson also insists he’s pleased with her performance.
