Diversity Role Models Carnival 2013

Expect glamour. Expect sparkle. Expect to be dazzled. Yes, Carnival is finally back and it's going to be magnificent!

Where: Café de Paris, London
When: Thursday, 24 Oct 2013
Doors: 7pm
Dress to party!

This year, those lucky enough to attend will enjoy a host of acts, the most notable of which are Jimmy 'Don't Leave Me This Way' Somerville, and the fabulous Globe Girls, who have previously wowed the likes of Elton John and Naomi Campbell with their sophisticated take on drag complete with extravagant wigs, handmade costumes and killer heels! And with Amy Lamé hosting, it's sure to be a riot!

Returning this year in his role as auctioneer extraordinaire, Christopher Biggins will be putting a fabulous range of auction lots under the hammer:

Jacob Kenedy and Victor Hugo's Bocca di Lupo is the setting for one of the auction winnings, where 20 guests will enjoy an array of delectable Italian small plates and wines while catching up with none other than special guest, Gareth Thomas (in pic above covered in Post-It notes).

Dinner at Heston Blumenthal will be playing host to two lucky Carnival guests who will be dining on the chef's typically quirky creations (meat fruit anyone?) matched with wine.

Swedish Lapland is the backdrop for another of the spectacular options which will see two guests staying in the lap (no pun intended) of luxury at the legendary ICEHOTEL for three nights, one of which will be in one of the famous ice room wrapped in fur blankets. The all inclusive trip will also feature a magical tour of the Northern Lights by snowmobile. Thank you so much to DISCOVER THE WORLD and ICEHOTEL who, in partnership with VisitSweden, have sponsored this incredible prize!

Prefer sunnier climes? How about a long weekend to at a private residence in the South of France? Featured in the top magazines such as Vogue, Conde Nast Traveller and Tatler, La Fraissinède, is an exceptional country retreat set in 120 acres of spectacular grounds in the French Languedoc. With only six bedrooms in the entire property, this is the ultimate prize for anyone in need of some R&R.

Art aficionados are also in for a treat. There's an original black and white lithograph of Picasso's 'Eveil', one of a series created to accompany poems by Sappho, while the world-renowned artist, Andrew Salgado will be creating a piece for the night. Maggi Hambling has also offered up her talents for the cause and will be donating a piece from her collection.

Olympic fever may have died down now, but we've got the perfect boost in the form of a bona fideOlympic Torch donated by British rower and 2012 Olympic gold medallist, Katherine Grainger. And for those needing a reminder of Murray's Wimbledon win, there's also a signed t-shirt from the man himself. Prefer watching the tennis to collecting memorabilia? How about a private box for 14 people to watch the ATP tournament?

Clare Balding is also getting in on the act with two tickets to her live show followed by a trip to the green room to catch up with her and other celebrity guests.

The glambola is also back with loads of fun prizes to be won.

Last year sold out completely and we're expecting this year to be the same, so please buy your tickets early to avoid missing out.

AND YOU MIGHT JUST MEET THESE PEOPLE AT THE CARNIVAL
DiversityRM: Tim & Arif of DRM hit town today for Carnival prizes! Huge thanks on its way to all the lovely & generous people and brands that donated ;)
DiversityRM: Payday's here (or nearly!) What better way to spend it than on the DRM Carnival! Check it out and buy tickets here! http://bit.ly/15Rikll

STRICTLY NATALIE
Strictly favourite Natalie Gumede plays down winning chance
Friday, 27 September 2013
Strictly hopeful Natalie Gumede says her stage school background doesn't give her an advantage on the BBC1 dance extravaganza. The 29-year-old ex-Coronation Street actress, who has been installed as the 5/2 favourite to win the competition by the bookies, has played down her chances. "I trained at Italia Conti so I did dance as a kid but never professionally. Dancing is something that I never quite got the chance to do as I had an injury so I didn't go down that road. I haven’t danced for 10 years so now’s the opportunity." Natalie, who’s partnered with Artem Chigvintsev, hopes her twirl on the dancefloor will also show her fun side after playing Coronation Street villain Kirsty Soames. "I think this is a nice opportunity to close the door, not on Corrie, but on people’s perception of me as a performer, in that I am the baddie. This is all sequins, fabulousness and fun! "My Corrie castmates knew I loved Strictly so they've had a little giggle that I'm now taking part. Alan Halsall, Cath Tyldesley, Charlie Condou, Samia Ghadie have all sent messages of support."

AND SPEAKING OF NATALIE GUMEDE
frank3439: @NatalieGumede Absolutely superb Nat.
Confidential_CC: @frank3439 @NatalieGumede and she's a good dancer too.....hehe
frank3439: @Confidential_CC @NatalieGumede Cheeky lol.

STEPHEN FRY
THE
"BRINGER OF EVIL"
SAYS RUSSIA'S GAY LAW CREATOR
Vitaly Milonov believes that British actor Stephen Fry is a "bringer of evil", thinks homosexuality is a perversion and thanks God for giving Russia Vladimir Putin to defend its values. Milonov, a lawmaker in the local parliament of Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg, has become a hate figure for gay rights activists and not just for his inflammatory rhetoric. He has also had a concrete effect on modern Russian society by introducing a hugely controversial law into the local parliament outlawing "gay propaganda". Once passed by the former imperial capital, the law was picked up by deputies in the federal lower house of parliament the State Duma and passed nationwide and was signed into law by President Putin in June. But activists say the law can be used for a broad crackdown against gays in Russia and the controversy has created a huge headache for the Kremlin which has faced calls for a boycott of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. But Milonov remains defiant in the face of the furore and makes no secret of his views about Fry who has called for Russia to be stripped of its right to host the Games and led an increasingly visible Internet campaign. "For me Stephen Fry is a bringer of evil, as he expresses ideas which are evil," Milonov told AFP in an interview in Saint Petersburg. Milonov and Fry became arch enemies after the two men held a face-to-face meeting in Saint Petersburg in March and have traded insults through the media ever since. Fry is an implacable critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he once memorably said looked like the Dobby the House Elf from the Harry Potter books. Despite the outcry sparked by the adoption of the law both in Saint Petersburg and nationwide, Milonov sees no harm in what he describes as "preventative" legislation. "It's a declaration of our values, our response to the challenges of the present time." "Thank God that we have Putin, who defends the basic interests of Russia, for defending its values," said Milonov, saying that Russia "needs to resist the wave of degradation that has seized the Western world." "I do not know why we have to apologise in front of Westerners. The preaching tone that they adopted in this area does not suit us." The law orders fines for individuals and organisations deemed to have violated the law, and, unusually, also singles out foreigners who risk fines of up to 100,000 rubles ($A3,335), detention for 15 days and deportation. Many commenters believe Russia underestimated the international reaction to the law, which now risks overshadowing the Sochi Winter Games, the biggest event in its post-Soviet history. But Milonov, who describes himself as a "man of European culture" defends the law as part of a promotion of family values in Russia and the protection of children. "We have to defend the future of our children," said Milonov, who has children aged four and one.

CHER GIVES RUSSIA THE COLD SHOULDER
In a recent interview Cher revealed that she turned down an offer to sing at the Sochi Olympics:
I can't name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I'd like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don't feel the way the government does. Way to go, Cher! Sadly, though, the unnamed oligarch was feeding her a line: 88% of Russians allegedly support the country's draconian "gay propaganda" ban that criminalizes public expressions of support for LGBT people.

In other Russia-related news, NBA commissioner David Stern slammed the sports world for staying silent in the face of Russia's persecution of LGBT people. Speaking recently in Philadelphia at the Beyond Sport Summit, Stern said, "I'm gonna behave myself, for the record here, which is unlike me. But you know, the first phone call to the new head of the Olympics was from President Putin, and everyone wants to talk about the Russian law on homosexuality. Think about the opportunities that sports have to make a continuing statement, and the only thing that we're saying in that context is 'Shhhh! No one say anything!'"

Also denouncing Russia's anti-gay laws is Seth Wescott, a two-time gold-medal-winning Olympic snowboarder from the United States. Yesterday the 37-year-old Mainer criticized the IOC's selection of Sochi as a host city, telling the Associated Press, "The human rights stuff that's going on, there's a potential for it to be an incredibly negatively-overshadowed Olympics." He also spoke about female snowboarders he knows who are lesbians: "They're wonderful human beings, and I think for them to be discriminated against is a crime. They should be able to be who they are and compete proudly. They represent our country incredibly well and they don't need to be the object of that kind of criticism and negativity."

Sadly, the IOC has made it clear that instead of punishing Russia for its draconian anti-LGBT crackdown, it will punish pro-equality athletes who express support for LGBT people at the Sochi Olympic Games.
